Cyber Safety Tips For Parents and Children

The internet is the New Playground for children and at any given time children have 100% access to over 1.8 billion pornographic websites.

Do's for Parents:

  •  Do monitor your child's internet usage if you are concerned about what they are doing online and the amount of time they spend online. Children should not spend all his/her time on the computer and let it become their "best friend".

  • Always keep the computer in a public area e.g. family room, kitchen etc,  where it can be monitored and not in your child's bedroom.

  • Know enough about computers so that you can enjoy the computer with your children  - become a "net-savvy parent"

  • Monitor where your child goes online - which sites they visit and frequent.

  • Teach them never to meet an online friend offline unless you are present.

  • Teach them what information they can share with others online and what they can’t (like telephone numbers, address, their full name and school) and encourage good Netiquette

  • Let their be good communication between and your child so that he/she feels comfortable coming to you with questions. Talk to them about the Importance of Internet Safety.

  • Get to know the friends they have online and offline.

  • Keep them out of Chat rooms.

Don'ts for Parents:

  • Don't allow your children unlimited internet time.

  • Don't allow the use of personal or family information online.

  • Don't allow you children to meet with anybody they have met online.

  • Don't let the computer become their only "friend".

  • Don't avoid telling your children the truth about Internet Dangers

     

The virtual world never sleeps. No matter what time your online, someone else—a stranger—is there with you.


Do's for Children

  • Obey the rules your parents have set forth with regard to usage of the internet. Be honest with your parents.

  • Tell your parents if you encounter inappropriate behavior, language or images on the internet and immediately close your browser.

  • Help others e.g. siblings when they are online - teach them safety tips you know.

  • Take advantage of the internet for all your school projects. 

  • Respect the privacy and feelings of others. Practice proper Netiquette.


Don't for Children:


  • Never give personal information over the internet.
  • Do not exchange photographs, videos without your parents consent.
  • Don't give out your password for any account to anyone.
  • Never cyberbully anyone else.
  • Don't steal or make copies of copyrighted material without the owner's permission.
  •  Never respond to inappropriate emails. Don't ignore it. Inform your parents right away.
  • Refrain from using pictures on social networks, blogs, chat rooms, or as an avatar. Use clip art or set your profile to private.
  • Don't be friends with anyone online that you would not feel comfortable introducing to your family.
  • Never meet up with someone you met with online without your parents.
