The Effects of Cyberbullying

Cyber-bullying will have a number of effects on a child, some of which could be devastating and leave lifelong scars. In extreme cases these effects could lead to suicide. The effects could include; guilt, humiliation, anger, stress, fear and depression.

  • Guilt – feeling that the predator activity was somehow self-provoked or encouraged in some way.
  • Humiliation – bullying on a Social Website opens the activity to public scrutiny and any published insults will be extremely embarrassing.
  • Anger – caused through the frustration of not being able to retaliate and not knowing the identity of the predator.
  • Stress – any form of the unknown causes stress and children, especially, are not equipped to cope with the unknown.
  • Fear – a child will live in constant fear of being confronted by the perpetrator.
  • Depression – A bullied child will withdraw from everyone and all activities resulting in lonely depression.
It is obvious that those who experience cyber-bullying also experience a range of negative behaviors. These include poor concentration low school achievement and absenteeism from school. Another problem of these negative emotions and behaviors is that the victim is more likely to resolve this strain through some sort of antisocial behavior.
